While consumers may not think that they have a large voice in what corporations produce for the marketplace, they have more power than they realize. Just about every type of company out there has some type of government incentive to produce eco-friendly goods, but many are still not willing to make the small investment to make the world a better place.
The problem with buying products that are not “green” is that the corporation has no incentive to change over and start making safer products. Baby bottles are a perfect example of this. Many of them are still manufactured with unsafe compounds that have been proven to be harmful in the development of a child, yet they are still in production and worse, people are still buying them!
Today, there is a “green” option for just about everything that we use. From laptops to televisions, from socks to pillows, someone is making a “green” product that is both affordable and of a high quality. The old complaint that it was not cost effective is no longer true and there simply is no reason for companies to continue to produce things that are not safe for the environment or the people using them.
Something else to consider is that the more successful a company becomes with the product, the less they can charge. When they are able to mass produce an item, the overall costs will go down per item and many “green” companies are passing those savings onto the consumer to give them a more affordable product. This enables them to realize success and allows the consumer to be able to fit the products or goods into their budget.
The time has come to start to take notice of the products that we are buying. If it is not in a recycled container, put it back on the shelf. If it made from harmful compounds, leave it there and buy something else. The more aware consumers are about the goods they are purchasing, the better chance we have of corporations coming around to the “green living” way of thinking.
