FDA Looking Closer at BPA Issues

by Will on January 17, 2010

Today, in the Wall Street Journal, there was an article titles, “Regulators Turn Cautious on Bisphenol A“. You can read the article if you are a subscriber to the WSJ, but the basics are this:

FDA is taking a look at the effects of BPA – which is a change from their 2008 ruling that it was ‘Safe’. Now – they are not going as far as to say it isn’t safe, but they have made some recommendations concerning the use of plastics that have BPA in them. Here are a couple:

  • Discard scratched plastic bottles (BPA can leak from the scratches)
    • EcoTip: Get a BPA Free Stainless Steel Bottle (overt-plug for PBC)
  • Limit using cups, bottles, or containers for hot beverages – there is some thought that the heat could cause the BPA to leech into the fluid

The FDA also released their position paper on the BPA issue. You can find it here: Update on Bisphenol A for Use in Food Contact Applications: January 2010

Regardless of their findings, it seems like if the FDA is unsure or back-peddling, the safest option may be to avoid it. Personally, the less chemical involvement in the packaging the better.

What is your take on the whole FDA, BPA issue?
